Privacy policy
Short version: the free review runs on your device, we count visits and clicks without ads, and we only ask for an email if you want one.
What runs on your device
The free review runs in your browser. The chess engine analyses your game on your own device. Your games are not uploaded to us for the free review.
What your browser sends when you import
When you import a game by username, your browser asks the public Lichess or Chess.com API directly. We don't proxy these requests and we don't store the results. Requests are made only when you ask for them, one at a time.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 and OpenPanel to count page views and product events, such as "review started" or "Coach notify opened". OpenPanel requests go through our own domain. There are no ads on this site, and we don't sell your data.
Coach
Coach is not active yet. When it launches, the moves of the game and the engine facts will be sent to generate the explanation. Nothing else is sent.
Notify-me email
Leaving your email is optional. We only use it to tell you when Coach launches, and we delete it when you ask. It is stored with a one-way hash of your browser's user agent. We don't store your IP address.
Local storage
Your browser keeps a few things on your device so the site works the way you left it:
- Your theme choice (light or dark).
- The last username and source you imported from.
- The game you pasted, for the current tab only (in session storage, cleared when you close the tab).
You can clear all of this in your browser settings at any time.
Your choices and contact
You can block analytics with your browser or an extension, and the review still works. To ask a question or have your email deleted, contact Zane at contact@explainmychess.com.
