PGN analyzer: paste a game and review it free
Paste the PGN of your game into the box and press Review. You get accuracy, a label on every move and the key moments explained. No sign-up. The engine runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Copy the PGN of your game (steps below).
- Paste it into the box above. You can also drop a
.pgnfile on it. - Press Review.
The box checks every move first. If the game is fine, the review page opens and the engine starts working. A short game finishes in seconds.
How to get a PGN from Chess.com
Chess.com's help article on PGNs gives these steps:
- Open the game and click the Share icon at the bottom of the Analysis tab.
- In the pop-up window, select the PGN tab and click Download.
- If you want clock times in the PGN, tick the box next to the clock icon.
Open the downloaded file in any text editor and copy the text, or drop the file on the box. On the Chess.com app, the same article says to tap More and choose Export PGN, then tap Copy.
How to get a PGN from Lichess
Open the game, then use the share or export option to copy or download the PGN. Labels differ between Lichess versions, so look for a menu with PGN in its name. If you want your recent games without exporting, use the Lichess or Chess.com tab in the box and enter a username.
What happens with several games in one PGN
Many sites let you download a whole archive in one file. Paste that file and the review opens the first game only. The rest are ignored, and only the first game's moves are checked. To review another game, paste it on its own.
What happens when a move is illegal
Bad moves are the most common PGN problem. A copy that lost a character, or a game from a chess variant, will fail. We check moves with chess.js before anything is analysed, and you get a message that names the move:
Game 1, move 3 (Black): Ke3 isn't legal in this position.
The number is the move number in the game, and “(Black)” appears when Black's move is the one that failed. Fix that move in your text and press Review again. Nothing is analysed until every move checks out.
Two other messages you may see: “We couldn't find any moves” when the text has tags but no move list, and a message about the [FEN] tag when a custom start position is not valid.
Where the analysis runs
The engine is Stockfish, running as a Web Worker in your tab. Your PGN stays in your browser. Details on the engine are on the Stockfish online page.
PGN analyzer questions
What is a PGN?
PGN is plain text that lists the moves of a game, usually with tags such as [White] and [Result] above them. Any chess site can export one.
Can I paste several games at once?
You can paste them, but the review opens the first game only. Paste one game at a time.
Is my PGN uploaded?
No. The PGN is checked and analysed in your browser. It is not sent to our server.
Is there a size limit?
If you drop a .pgn file, it must be under 2 MB. Whatever you paste, only the first game is reviewed.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no limit on games.
