AI Chess Coach: What Is Free Now and What Is Coming
Today the free part of this site is the fact layer: for each key moment of your game you get a sentence you can check on the board and a line you can play. Coach, which explains moves in plain language at your level, is in development and not available yet.
What is free today
Paste a game and Stockfish 18 lite analyses it in your browser. You get an accuracy score, a label for every move, and the key moments. For each key moment there is one fact, for example that your move lets the enemy queen attack your king and a bishop at once, and a line of moves you can play on the board to see it happen.
This is not a written lesson. It tells you what happened and proves it. It does not yet tell you why a player at your level tends to miss it. That is the gap Coach is meant to fill.
What Coach will add
- Plain-language explanations of key moments, pitched at your rating.
- Short drills built from the positions where you lost the most.
- Follow-up questions about a position.
We have not set a launch date. If you want it, tell us which part you would use. It takes one click and an email is optional.
How we will keep Coach honest
A language tool can sound sure and still be wrong about chess. So the writing step will not be allowed to invent analysis. It will only receive facts the engine already produced: the best move, the score change, the line, the material count.
Every move that appears in an explanation will have to be legal in your game or in an engine line you can open on the board. If it is not, the sentence will be replaced by the plain fact. You should never have to trust a move you cannot play.
What to look for in an AI chess coach
- Can you verify it? A good explanation points to a line. If you cannot play the line on a board, treat the text as a guess.
- Is it about your games? Advice that comes from your own mistakes beats general tips. Check that it works on a PGN you supply.
- Does it match your level? At 1200 you need the idea, not a twelve-move variation.
- How much is free? Find out how many games, how many explanations and whether you need an account before you rely on it.
- Does it show patterns? One explained game helps. Seeing the same error across twenty games helps more. Our report does that part for free.
Start with a game
Paste a PGN above and open the review. Read the key moments, play the lines, and see whether the facts alone answer your question. If you still want the “why” in words, that is exactly the signal we need for Coach.
Questions
Is Coach available now?
No. It is in development. The free review is live today and includes a checked fact and a playable line for each key moment.
Will the free review shrink when Coach launches?
That is not the plan. The engine review stays free; Coach would be an extra on top.
Can the coach make up moves?
Our rule is that it must not. Any move in an explanation has to be legal in the game or in an engine line shown on the board. If it is not, the text falls back to the plain fact.
